Tomorrow’s business is done with today humans

Les Tissages de Charlieu is committed to prove the effectiveness and profitability of sustainable development. The company is convinced that the three pillars of this model (social protection and human development, environmental protection and economic sustainability) represent the natural evolution of the business of tomorrow.

Social protection and human development

Environmental protection

Economic sustainability

THE MAIN RICHNESS OF LES TISSAGES DE CHARLIEU IS ITS TEAM

“The enterprise as support for the human development”, such is the credo of Les Tissages de Charlieu. It is both a philosophical and an economic creed, because when one is “comfortable in one’s shoes”, one works better and more efficiently and serves better the client!

Trust men and women to enhance their work

The weaving activity that exists on the lands of Charlieu since the 16th century allowed the transmission of ancestral know-how. It is these skills that have made the weaving teams (“gareurs”, weavers, knotters, warpings), research and development teams as well as support teams (scheduling, accounting…) a responsive and efficient company. It is because of these qualities that Les Tissages de Charlieu offer quality fabrics in vogue.

A concrete social commitment

Les Tissages de Charlieu is convinced of the importance of the social responsibility of enterprises today (see below), they are specifically engaged in this direction.
It is with this objective that disabled workers have their place in the company, which employs twice that required by law (12%). The rate of employee training is also higher (1.5 times) than the legal rate.
Similarly, eight employees work from their homes, between Paris, Lyon and Grenoble. This configuration not only allows them to continue to work for Les Tissages de Charlieu while living in the city of their choice, but also to drastically reduce car journeys, and therefore greenhouse emissions.
The company’s deep conviction is that its success is the result of the work of all, in the same direction. Every employee, regardless of his position, contributes to customer service, sales and results. It is therefore normal that each receives a return of his work. To realize this belief, 25% of the company’s net result before tax is distributed to all employees in the form of profit-sharing, twice per year.
Finally, each is informed of the company’s activities and projects, regardless of his position, during the biennial meetings which bring together all the staff.

The CSR (corporate social responsibility) concerns the liability of an organization with regard to the impacts of its decisions and activities on the society and on the environment, resulting in a transparent and ethical behavior that:

  • Contributes to sustainable development including the health and the welfare of the society.
  • Takes into account the stakeholders expectations
  • Complies with the laws in force and is compatible with international standards
  • Is integrated throughout the company and implemented in its relations

A REDUCED ENVIRONNEMENTAL IMPACT

The Les Tissages de Charlieu fabrics are “made in France” and from European Union et French social and environmental rules, they are among the cleanest tissues of the planet.

In 2009, Les Tissages de Charlieu creates the ALTER-TEX association, which brings together industrialists of the textile sector. His objective then is to structure sustainable development in the French textile industry. ALTER-TEX also wishes to highlight the French textile that rightly responds to very strict environmental and social standards.

So 20% of the turnover of Les Tissages de Charlieu is made with organic-fair trade and/or recycled textiles, under the ALTER-TEX Charter. This allows to produce from organic cotton, organic farming, which prohibits, among other things, the use of toxic pesticides.

Finally, the Les Tissages de Charlieu fabrics are certified by GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) that ensures that all production stages meet the requirements of the “bio” production on the protection of the environment, and from the cultivation of materials to the labelling and marketing. These steps must also meet social minima.

To show its commitment to the French textile industry, Les Tissages de Charlieu are certified French Origin Guarantee (OFG) and participates actively in the development of the repository of the France Earth Textile label.

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN THE TEXTILE INDUSTRY

To produce fabrics (warp and weft or knit) the textile industry uses natural raw materials (cotton, wool, silk) or chemical (polyester, viscose, polyamide). It should be noted that the environment protection takes place from the production of these raw materials because, among all textile production stages, which is often the most impactful on the environment.
However, for each of these materials, there are alternatives that fit in the philosophy of sustainable development. Here is an example with organic cotton.

Organic cotton, it is good!

Cotton plant consumes a lot of water: 10,000 liters of water are needed to produce 1 kilo of cotton. In addition, it represents 25% of the pesticides and herbicides dumped for 2.5% of the cultivated areas of the planet. Much is at stake, since cotton is used in 50% of the tissues in the world…
The cultivation of organic cotton, it is not necessarily consume less water, but it is especially not to get it dirty with chemicals that poison the Earth and cotton. Do not forget that this cotton will be in contact with our skin!

Organic and ethical cotton, it’s even better!

The company concerned to liability cannot lose interest in working conditions at each stage of his product processing. Why buy organic cotton if children harvest it?

This is why Les Tissages de Charlieu buy only certified GOTS (Global Organic textile Standard) organic cotton. This label, issued by official certifying organizations, requires a high level of environmental requirements, technical qualities, human toxicity and minimum social benefits.

The label allows to trace all channels since the scope of the cotton farmers until the garment in the store, via transactions certificates, to ensure that rightly social and environmental standards were well respected throughout the process of production of the garment or fabric.

“It takes 10,000 liters of water to produce 1 kilo of cotton!”

Les 3 piliers du Développement Durable - Les Tissages de Charlieu

Organic, ethical and profitable cotton, it’s sustainable!

Les Tissages de Charlieu always keep in mind the company’s profitability and competitiveness, while exercising their social and environmental responsibility. Their organic cotton products are economically viable and represent approximately 15% of the annual turnover. This is the principle of sustainable development.

No business can exist without the economy and the market, but no business can also exist without thinking about the future of the planet. Consumers are inseparable from this approach, because it is the consumer who made the act of purchase. We are all responsible.
It is essential to set aside policy/ideological/moralist divisions, to be today the players of this change.

Practical implementation of sustainable development

Les Tissages de Charlieu developed end products , which the three of them cover all aspects of sustainable development:

– They are of course made in France

– Stoles are made from organic cotton ( Létol )

– The bags are made from recycled fiber ( promotional bags )

– Belts are made in suitable workshops ( disabled workers )    ( Tonnerre de Belt)

And as this would not be sustainable development without economic component , we can say that these three products are best sellers !
